Why one protein number doesn't fit everyone

Most protein advice hands you a single figure and leaves you to guess. After 45 years teaching the nutritional value of food, I've found people do better with two questions: how much protein do I need at this stage of life, and which protein foods does my body actually digest well? Modern nutrition answers the first. Ayurveda answers the second. This guide puts them side by side and keeps them clearly separate.

Vata

Air and space. Cold, dry, light, mobile. Does best with warm, moist, grounding protein and regular meals.

Pitta

Fire and water. Hot, sharp, intense. Does best with cooling protein and calming spices.

Kapha

Water and earth. Heavy, slow, steady. Does best with light, lean, well-spiced protein.

From Helen

I'm a Doctor of Chiropractic and the author of two published books on Ayurveda. For 45 years I have taught what food does in the body, including the importance of protein for people who eat vegan, vegetarian or mixed diets. This guide is where I'd start with anyone. It is educational only; it does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace your clinician's advice.
