What the research says (modern muscle research, not traditional Ayurvedic teaching):
• You lose strength faster than size. Muscle strength drops about 30–35% from around age 40 onward, and the fast "power" fibers decline 30–40% between your 30s and 80s. In a study of 907 adults over 60, muscle mass fell about 3–7% per decade while grip strength fell about 12% per decade.
• Fat can move into the muscle itself. Researchers call it myosteatosis: fat, and sometimes scar-like fibrous tissue, slowly replacing healthy muscle fiber. A 2026 review warns that rising childhood obesity may affect spinal development this way, and that early changes can be missed in young people.
